Wednesday Why's

Why????

I am wanting to know what the common practice is for recess on rainy days like today. I understand the need for teachers to have a break from the students and for the students to have a break from the classroom. But I'm also sure that there is some alternative for recess on days when the weather is so poor. Apparently Samantha is not aware of the alternative so I thought I would find out from you what the policy is. She came home today with pants wet all the way up to her knees, boots soaked through and socks that were so wet that I actually wrung them out. She said they had been this wet since first recess. Obviously walking around in wet socks and shoes all day cannot be healthy. I'd like to let her know what her other options are for recess besides for standing outside in the pouring down rain.
(Above letter sent to teacher today via email!)

You will have to post the response (or at least summarize it for us). That is a good Wednesday Why-- and nice because you should actually get some kind of answer.

I asked Brook the other day what they do when it is raining outside and he said that they still go outside, but there is an area that is under cover. He likes to play Star Wars and Spiderman on his recess though.

this was the response I got:

Hi,
I know how you feel, and there is a covered area (play shed) and an announcement is made that kids must stay under the cover, but as far as an indoor space, there just aren't any available. In the past, the gym or an empty classroom would have been used, but we are so packed that there just isn't any room. Hopefully the opening of the new schools next year will releive the overcrowded situations, but for this year, we kind of just have to deal with it.
I have begun sending my own daughther to school in rubber boots, pants tucked in. I know it's a pain, but if Sammy wants to bring a change of shoes and socks, that's an option. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Glad you posted the response. It is sad that things are so crowded.

I gave you a blog award today. Stop by Gravity of Motion. (I don't expect you to post about it. I just wanted to let you know I love your blog and LOVE that you are posting regularly!)

We are so over crowded!!! I think if I remember right that we are at 800 when we are suppose to be at 400. I could be wrong but that is what I am thinking. I am going to start sending Nate with rubber boots and maybe get him a rain coat. They should send a note home to the parents to let them know of the situation so we can send our kids to school perpaired. Thanks for the info.
